The book is a lyrical, often powerful examination of the initial Spanish contact with the mighty Aztec empire. The meetings between the emperor Montezuma (Moctezuma) and the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in are very well described, even if poetic .
Although he received the most prestigious of literary awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in for Selected Poems and a National Book Award in for Collected Poems, along with the critical acclaim of some of the most respected writers and critics of his time, Conrad Aiken never became a truly popular poet. This fact puzzled his admirers and, indeed, Aiken himself, who never lost his self. In all Aiken wrote over 50 books, including "Earth Triumphant" (), "The Charnel Rose" (), "The Brownstone Eclogues" (), "The Kid" (), "A Reviewer's ABC" (), "Collected Short Stories" (), "Collected Novels" (), and "Collected Poems " ().
